Speech Jaume Plensa

Leeuwarden 05-2018

Speech given during the opening of 11fountains on 18 May 2018.

Dear friends, I feel honoured to announce the fantastic opening of the 11Fountains project in Leeuwarden, European Capital of Culture 2018. Even though I can’t be with you in person, my heart is in Leeuwarden. I send you my warmest regards from the USA.

My fountain LOVE embraces the duality between heaven and earth. It’s a tribute to the low clouds that moisten the landscape of Friesland and nourish its fertile soil. It’s the connection between my Mediterranean Sea and your North Sea.

The fountain opposite the station in Leeuwarden connects the city centre with daily life. It welcomes and greets the people who come and go. In this work, we see two heads: a girl and a boy with their eyes closed. In the stillness and mystery of the cloud around them, they share the same dream about the future. Visitors can walk between the two heads in the thin mist emerging from the earth, and thus become part of this work. LOVE creates a place to be together. A peaceful place, right within the dynamic hustle and bustle of the train station.

Dear friends, I would like to thank the mayor of Leeuwarden and the city council for their extraordinary involvement. I would also like to thank the artistic leader of the 11Fountains project, her team and especially the inhabitants of the wonderful city of Leeuwarden for their warm and very positive reception of my work LOVE.

Enjoy the fountain. My warmest regards.
