Ice Fountain ready for construction

Dokkum 07-2018

After many tests it’s finally clear how the Ice Fountain will be constructed. Based on all the data from previous tests, obtained in cooperation with TU Delft among others, a new test setup was made at Mannen van Staal in Leeuwarden. The technology is provided by main contractor Dijkstra Draisma from Dokkum, Rots Maatwerk (Brummen) and Royal HaskoningDHV (Groningen). Artist Birthe Leemeijer is of course closely involved in the whole process and decides on the appearance of the fountain.

Recently, the decision was made to abandon the original plan to construct the Ice Fountain in concrete; it turned out that this material uses too much energy to cool and reacts too slowly. The Ice Fountain will be made in copper, which conducts much better and will give a more varied appearance.
In the coming period, we will work on the precision fine-tuning. The Ice Fountain will be installed this year in Dokkum on the redeveloped Market Square.

The first test results already show how varied the Ice Fountain will look.
